How to check if ChatGPT recommends your products (10-minute test)

Open ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini, ask 10 questions your shoppers would ask, and write down who gets named. If competitors show up and you don't, you have an AI visibility gap.

Write 10 questions

Start with the questions a real shopper would type. Use four types so you cover how people actually ask:

  • "Best" questions: "best [product]", "best [product] for [need]"
  • Comparison questions: "[you] vs [competitor]", "alternatives to [competitor]"
  • Problem questions: "how do I fix [problem your product solves]"
  • Brand questions: "is [you] legit", "[you] reviews"

Ask them in a fresh chat, in each engine

Open ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini. Ask each question in a logged-out or fresh chat so your own history does not skew the answer. Run the same ten questions through each engine so you can compare them fairly.

If you can, try Google's AI Mode too. Shopping questions increasingly trigger an AI answer there, and it often pulls from different sources than the chat assistants.

Record what you see

For each answer, write down four things: whether you were named, what position you appeared in, which sources the engine cited, and anything it said about you that is wrong or out of date. The cited sources are gold: they tell you exactly which gift guides, review sites and threads the assistant trusts in your category.

Score yourself

Ten questions across three engines gives you 30 answers. Count how many of those 30 named your store. A simple tally is enough: named in X of 30 answers, cited as a source in Y of 30.

What your score means

If you are named in most answers and your facts are right, you are in good shape; keep the sources that feed those answers healthy. If competitors appear and you do not, you have a visibility gap. If you are named but described wrongly, your problem is accuracy, not absence, and the fix is different.

When you are ready to go deeper, the next guide is a 20-point checklist that turns these findings into specific fixes for your store.

FAQ

Will the assistant give different answers to different people?

Yes, answers vary by phrasing, location and history. That's why you use fresh chats and run each question more than once.

How often should I retest?

Monthly is enough to see whether your changes are moving the answers.
